Masonry in Fern Creek
Fern Creek lies about 12 miles from downtown Louisville in the southeast part of Jefferson County, along Bardstown Road. Its oldest structure is a log home dating to 1789, and the community was first called Stringtown before becoming Fern Creek by the 1870s. It stayed agricultural for most of its history and has grown as a Louisville suburb since the 1960s. For masonry contractors in Fern Creek, that means most of the work is on brick homes from the 1960s onward, with a few much older farmhouses in the mix. The CDP counted about 20,009 people in 2008.
Along the old Bardstown Road
The earliest road through the area was Stage Road, linking Louisville to Bardstown. It became the Louisville and Bardstown Turnpike and then Bardstown Road. An interurban line connected the area in 1908, and from 1900 to 1928 the Jefferson County Fairgrounds operated off Bardstown Road, a site still marked by Fairground Road. Fern Creek was annexed into Louisville in 2003 with the city-county merger.
Brick homes from the 1960s on
Houses from Fern Creek's suburban growth are now 30 to 60 years old. Brick veneer and brick ranches from those decades hold up well, but the usual wear shows up:
- Chimney crowns and top courses that have cracked or loosened
- Step cracks in brick veneer at windows and garage corners
- Settled stoops and steps at the front door
- Retaining walls on sloped lots starting to lean
- Mortar loss under gutters and downspouts
We repair each with materials that match the house and fix the water source behind the damage.
Sloped lots and retaining walls
Southeastern Jefferson County is rolling country, and many Fern Creek yards have slopes that need walls. A wall that lasts has a compacted base below grade, a buried first course, drainage stone and a pipe to carry water away. Louisville Metro requires a building permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall, measured from the bottom of the wall to the top, and Fern Creek falls under Metro's rules. For taller walls, we plan for the permit and the right design before we start.
Older farmhouses
Fern Creek's farm past left some older houses with stone foundations, brick chimneys and outbuildings. Those need softer, lime-rich mortar and patient repair. Hard cement patches on old stone and brick trap moisture and cause more damage than they fix.
Columns, mailboxes and entry walls
Many Fern Creek homes have brick or stone mailbox columns, entry piers at the driveway and low walls around beds. These take frost and water from the top and splashing at the bottom. We rebuild cracked columns on a proper footing, add sloped caps that shed water and repoint low walls before water gets inside them.

Fern Creek Questions
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Fern Creek?
Fern Creek is under Louisville Metro rules, which require a building permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall. Shorter walls are exempt.
Can cracked brick veneer be repaired without replacing the wall?
Usually. We repair cracked joints, replace broken brick and fix the cause, such as a sagging lintel or settlement, without tearing out the whole wall.
Do you repair stone foundations on old farmhouses?
Yes. We reset loose stones and repoint with soft lime mortar that lets the foundation dry, rather than sealing it with cement.
Why do brick mailbox columns crack?
Water gets in at the top, freezes and pushes the brick apart, and many columns sit on shallow footings that move with frost. We rebuild them on a proper footing and add a sloped cap that sheds water.
